Below is a list of hotels in close proximity to the American Museum, as well as several student hostels. (This is not an exhaustive list, so you may do well to visit such travel search engines as Expedia, Orbitz or Travelocity for ideas and rates.)
If you will be driving to New York City, you might consider one of the New Jersey hotels, which offer free parking and commuter bus/rail links into the City (see the end of this document for a few ideas).

If You are Traveling to New York By Car…
Parking in New York City is PROHIBITIVELY EXPENSIVE! Those of you traveling to New York City by car might consider booking a hotel across the Hudson River in New Jersey—specifically, North Bergen, Parsippany, or Saddle Brook, New Jersey, where you can park for free and take a bus into the City. Hotel chains such as Days Inn, Holiday Inn, Howard Johnson, and Radisson can provide detailed information.
